Barnet’s Succot fruit and veg project

Barnet United Synagogue asked the community to donate the fruit and vegetables (still in edible condition) from members’ succahs and had a fantastic response. They added this to the fruit and vegetables from the shul succah, and with this they made three pots of soup (vegetable, pumpkin & sweetcorn, and pepper & tomato), muffins, and two large apple crumbles.

The apple crumbles will be used for the Monday Social (seniors club), and the rest will be served on EcoShabbat, which in Barnet will take place on 7th December.

The initiative was inspired by the principle in Judaism of Bal Tashchit (do not waste, do not destroy) and to raise awareness about the colossal amount of food waste in this country – a staggering 10.7 million tonnes of food goes into landfill every year.

Barnet also took part in the US Chesed project to collect Arba Minim which will be transformed into Havdalah spices.
