Chief Rabbi spends Induction Shabbat in Richmond

Richmond Shul was delighted to host the Chief Rabbi and Lady Mirvis and United Synagogue President Michael Goldstein and his wife Lara for the induction of Rabbi Chaim Golker. 135 people – the maximum that could be seated – attended the Friday night dinner and a packed Shul on Shabbat morning included the Mayor, Deputy Lieutenant, Leader of the Council, MP Sarah Olney and key Councillors plus inter faith leaders.

The Chief Rabbi spoke of the Golkers’ achievements in their 16 months at Richmond, which included a growing membership, doubling of the size of the Cheder, including an Israeli stream, regular youth club meetings, the sizeable young adults group and the growing involvement of local Israelis. He said that as Rabbi Golker was previously head of the Cheder, he was known and it was clear from talking to members across the community that he and his wife Gila were a perfect fit for Richmond – “a shidduch made in Heaven. They are much loved and their dedication is obvious and it is hugely appreciated. Richmond is going from strength to strength.”

Paul Lawrence, Chair of Richmond, said “we were thrilled to host the Chief Rabbi and President of the US over Shabbat. The Golkers are a highly intelligent, approachable and non-judgemental couple who have great energy and are already driving us forward. They are a wonderful fit and are inspiring us to greater things.”

Rabbi Chaim Golker said “It is a source of great pride to me that our community is growing and fulfilling the Jewish dreams of so many, who see the community as their Jewish home. We are truly becoming a bastion of Jewish life in South West London.”
