Barnet Shul Commemorates Yom Hazikoron and Yom Ha’atzmaut
Barnet Shul came together for Yom Hazikoron and Yom Ha’atzmaut last week with over 50 members of the community attending the event.
The evening started with mincha. After this, members of the community read out poems including Chaim Weitzman’s Silver Platter, which was beautifully presented by Hilary Daniels, Helen Rosen, Verna Lang and Natalie Shaw.
A roll of honour was then recited naming both the current hostages in Gaza and those who have recently been killed. This was read by Angela Kirby and Amanda Jackson. Rabbi Lister also recited El Maleh Rachamim in memory of our adopted hostage Shlomo Mansour who was tragically murdered.
We then continued with Maariv, which was followed by Hallel with a musical twist by our very own band, “Shul of Rock”, a reference to the Jack Black movie, “School of Rock.” The group came together at the last minute, with no time for full rehearsal, but still managed to sound great. The band consisted of Jonny Leigh on bass guitar, Jackson Glass on lead, Jake Silver on drums and Amelia Leigh on piano, and Mark Creeger sang in celebration of Israel Independence Day. Jake’s father and professional musician, Jason Silver arranged the pieces and organised two sectional rehearsals.
Later Richard Pater, CEO of BICOM joined via Zoom to give an update on the Israel situation. BICOM provides timely and accurate news and briefings and analysis on Israel and the Middle East.
The evening ended with the community singing an emotional and uplifting rendition of the Hatikvah.
