We were pleased to welcome pupils and staff from Avanti school to our annual Holocaust Memorial Day event.
It was an emotional and thought provoking morning starting with a welcome from Rabbi Sam Millunchick, followed by small group workshops and ending with a talk by 95 year old Isa Brysh.
Remarkably, speaking without notes, she told of her family’s journey from Nazi Germany through war torn Europe before ending up in England. Like many survivors, most of her wider family perished although both her parents and sister survived to rebuild their lives here.
We hope that the students took away with them some idea of the consequences of hatred and bigotry and injustice. As one pupil wrote, “The Holocaust was the result of prejudice unchecked – something I will remember for life.”
