Pre-Chanukah celebration for neurodivergent children and their families

We held a sell-out pre-Chanukah celebration for neurodivergent members last weekend. Hosted at Bushey United Synagogue with activities facilitated by staff from Gesher School and assisted by volunteers from across the community.

We understand that for some of our neurodivergent members, shul-based activities can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to celebrating festivals. Herts for Change, our newly formed support group of Hertfordshire Synagogues, set out to create an inclusive space where every person could participate comfortably.

Families were welcomed into a calm, friendly environment designed to reduce sensory overload with a range of activities, including Chanukah-themed crafts and games that encouraged fun without pressure. In addition, there was a designated quiet space for anyone who felt overstimulated or needed a time-out.

Parents expressed how meaningful it was to have an event tailored specifically to their family’s needs where they felt understood, supported and part of the community. We look forward to building on this success with more inclusive activities in the future.
