On Sunday, January 28th 2024, our Synagogue held its 128th Civic Service which this year was attended by an unprecedented number of local dignitaries. These included the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire The Mayor of South Yorkshire, the Master Cutler, The Mayor of Rotherham, The Archdeacon of Doncaster, the Bishop of Hallam, the Mayor of Rotherham, Lord Scriven, The Leader of the Sheffield Council Tom Holt and a number of other dignitaries. It was heartening that so many of the local leaders came to show their support in these very difficult times.
Following the service conducted by our own Rabbi Golomb, who gave his usual excellent humerous speech of welcome, the dignitaries together with 125 guests sat down to tea followed by short speeches from the Lord Mayor and the Master Cutler.
The key objective of the event is to raise money for our local Childrens Hospital. This year the collection together with matched funding from an anonymous donor amounted to £6,200 our best yet.
The event could not have taken place without the hard work of Lynn Wilfin, our treasured administrator, her husband Stephen Wilfin our Finance Officer and Selwyn Burchhardt, a previous Shul President and our expert on protocol.
