On Sunday, Sutton & District United Synagogue held a super Chanukah party – one of the largest and most vibrant events the community has seen in years.

Some 80 attendees enjoyed latkes, doughnuts, tea, coffee and other Chanukah delights. The tables were garnished with dreidels and a selection of gold and silver chocolate Chanukah gelt.

Minister and Chazan David Rome presented the children with bespoke Chanukah dreidel gifts as well as entertaining those gathered with fabulous Chanukah, Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish and jazz songs accompanied by piano maestro Roland Perrin.

The menorah was lit by members and friends of the community followed by a hearty rendition of Ma’oz Tzur. Chazan Rome explained to the community the history of the Ma’oz Tzur melody and how it had originated as a non-Jewish melody but had over the many centuries been transformed into a Jewish anthem symbolising Jewish survival.

Grateful thanks to all those who helped make the event such a success.
