Yom Ha’atzmaut at Catford & Bromley Synagogue

Over 50 people attended our community’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration on Tuesday afternoon.

Entertainment included Israeli songs which were led by a quartet of singers, guitarist and ukulele players which had the audience singing and dancing.

The poignancy of the day was highlighted with a monochrome video of the 1947 United Nations debate, vote, and speech by David Ben Gurion.
A former member, visiting from Israel, gave an amusing and insightful talk on the 12 years since he and his wife made Aliyah, explaining the complexities first encountered when dealing with banks, civil servants, and supermarkets, but also the helpfulness and kindness shown to them.
Afternoon tea included falafel, dips, salads and fruit.

A final video showed the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, making a powerful speech, taking the organisation to task for their blatant antisemitism.

Everyone appreciated that, although this was a celebration of Israel’s birth, it was hard to rejoice while the hostages were still not free. The afternoon finished with everyone singing Hatikvah.
