Yom Ha’azmaut at Wembley 2026

There was a voluntary  `dress code` for Wembley Shul this past Shabbat – blue and white. Outside, the weather obliged by providing a beautiful blue and white sky and inside, with joy and happiness, we celebrated the 78th Yom Ha`atzmaut of the State of Israel.

Whilst we enjoyed our Shakshuka and other Israel themed dishes. We were privileged to hear our much loved and admired member, Hillier Wise, recollect how he and fellow students went to Manchester Square in London on May 14 1948, to celebrate the creation of the State of Israel and how they all joined together to dance a hora in an emotional celebration. He then went to the cinema later that day, where the usual programme included a Newsreel. To his amazement, there he was with his friends, recorded in celluloid for all to see on a memorable day!

Other members, too, shared some of their memories and the Kiddush ended with a heartfelt rendering of the Hatikvah.
