Rabbi Jason and Rebbetzen Elise Kleiman became Pinner United Synagogue’s rabbinic couple in February 2025. After more than three decades in different Jewish communities across the UK, and having spent 20 of those years in Leeds, the Kleimans moved down south to begin their new chapter.
“Joining Pinner gave us the opportunity to come to London and engage with a wonderful provincial-style community. It has that village feel – intimate, welcoming and full of warmth,” said Rabbi Kleiman.
What has struck them most since arriving is the friendliness that defines the community. That welcoming atmosphere means that anyone attending the shul for the first time is quickly made to feel at home. If they wish, one of the wardens will even offer them a public welcome during the service.
Pinner also has a strong volunteering culture, from supporting security and running children’s services to preparing kiddushim and helping organise events.
One particularly popular initiative is ‘Chat and Share’, a volunteer-led gathering that brings senior members of the community together for lunch or coffee, with guest speakers. The programme helps ensure that older members remain connected and have the opportunity to spend time with other members.
Another much-loved programme is called ‘Maturians’, comprising volunteer-led events where guests can enjoy a meal and a tribute act. They are well-attended by Pinner members, ex-members, and members of neighbouring communities.
“People who have moved away still have a real love for Pinner,” Rebbetzen Kleiman said. “That says a great deal about the community.”
Since arriving, Rabbi and Rebbetzen Kleiman have been so impressed with the thirst for learning in the Pinner community. A few days after starting the job, Rabbi Kleiman responded to a request for Talmudic learning by delivering the popular Wednesday morning Gemara Shiur. Then one of the ladies asked for a weekly women’s learning session which is held on a Monday morning and attended by around 15 women each week.
In addition, there is the popular ‘O-PINN-ION’ discussion group, as well as a number of joint learning events with Northwood & Ruislip United Synagogue.
“There are so many fantastic events that take place here, such as our recent Friday Night Dinner featuring an acapella group. Pinner is a community full of energetic, caring and welcoming members and we are lucky to be a part of it,” Rabbi and Rebbetzen Kleiman said.
