Barnet Shul recently took part in EcoJudaism’s Souper Succot Challenge. The initiative connects environmental responsibility with community care by encouraging shul members to donate fruit and vegetables used in their succah, rather than discarding them. These donations were turned into delicious, healthy meals by volunteers for the senior members to enjoy at the Monday Social club.
Originally pioneered by Barnet Eco Lead and Eco Judaism’s Community Sustainability Lead, Donna Cohen, the Souper Succot Challenge now includes EcoJudaism shuls across the country, including communities in Leicester and Oxford, and is part of their Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) for shuls. With the UK creating 10 millions tonnes of waste food every year, this is a small way that shuls can help to overcome this.
