Catford’s double Chanukah celebration

Catford & Bromley Synagogue had a double celebration for Chanukah.

‘The Secret of the Chicken Soup’ pantomime was written, produced, sung and performed in a spoof of Red Riding Hood and The Wizard of Oz.

Grandma needed her chicken soup which had to be taken to her in the dark and forbidding forest by Red Riding Hood and Dorothy, played beautifully by youngsters, acting and singing their way throughout the pantomime. They are soon joined by a rock’n’roll evil wolf who cajoles our heroines and winds up the audience much to the annoyance of Tin Man and the Scarecrow who turns out to have a Mastermind’s brain. The secret of the chicken soup is eventually revealed, creating a very satisfactory ending.

On the 7th afternoon of Chanukah the Shul had a community Chanukiah lighting with over 60 members and their families attending, and enjoying a Chanukah hot meal of latkes, pizza, doughnuts and more, accompanied by live piano music. Rabbi Weisz lit a Grand Chanukiah in the courtyard, despite near gale-force winds where the traditional Chanukah songs were sung out with gusto.
