Central Synagogue hosted a bumper celebration for Chazan Steven Leas on Shabbat Terumah, Saturday 1 March, to commemorate and celebrate 22 years of service from him to the Central Synagogue after leaving South Africa.
In excess of 300 members and guests attended a wonderful choral service in which Chazan Leas participated to his strengths which was followed by congratulatory speeches and well earned praise for an exceptional and popular cantor who had made an exceptional contribution to the Central Synagogue.
Chazan Leas spoke at length from the pulpit, explaining how he had arrived at the synagogue and praising and thanking the various chairmen whom he had served, past and present colleagues and the current Rabbi, Rabbi Barry Lerer, and expressing gratitude to his family, many of whom had travelled from South Africa for the occasion, including his father.
The synagogue chairman Lloyd Keisner presented Chazan Leas with a book containing photographs of his time at Central and tributes and anecdotes from members of the Community.
The service was followed by a sumptuous kiddush lunch enjoyed by all, befitting the occasion.
Chairman of Central Synagogue Lloyd Keisner said: “This was an amazing celebration worthy of a wonderful chazan who has been the mainstay of the synagogue for over 22 years.”
Rabbi Barry Lerer said: “This was a wonderful Shabbat to praise and celebrate a truly gifted chazan who has brought so much pleasure to the members of Central.”
Chazan Leas said “I was humbled by the warmth and generosity shown to me and look forward to many more years of service to this wonderful community.”
