Tribe Youth Directors from communities across London and Essex came together this week for an inspiring meet-up with the Chief Rabbi.
The event offered a powerful opportunity to connect, share ideas and receive chizuk (spiritual encouragement) for the important role our youth directors play throughout the United Synagogue.
The Chief Rabbi opened with a D’var Torah about Chanukah, highlighting the connection between the words חֲנוּכָּה (Chanukah) and חִנּוּךְ (Chinuch – education). He explained that before we take a stand or make a statement, we must first be grounded in true knowledge and understanding. In today’s world, people are often quick to champion causes they know little about. Youth directors hold the key to giving the next generation the education, inspiration and clarity they need to stand proudly and confidently as Jews.
Rabbi Mirvis also reflected on the miracle of the Menorah burning for eight nights, far beyond what anyone believed was possible. He explained that this miracle teaches us about potential: the hidden inner strength that each of us possesses. Just as the oil burned longer than expected, the Youth Directors – and the young people they work with – have far greater power and potential than they realise.
Following the D’var Torah, there was an open Q&A session where youth directors raised real challenges they encounter in their roles from engaging teens in a noisy world to navigating complex social and religious issues. The Chief Rabbi responded with wisdom, warmth and a genuine appreciation for their dedication.
Everyone left feeling energised, understood and deeply inspired, ready to bring renewed passion and creativity back to their communities, and to continue guiding our young people with strength, knowledge and Jewish pride.
