More than 120 people attended an excellent talk on Wednesday evening about Israel, Gaza and International Law: Why it Matters. Members from several United Synagogues joined a large contingent from Belmont.
Belmont’s Michael Caplan KC, himself an expert in international law, brilliantly chaired the conversation with UK Lawyers for Israel’s legal director, Natasha Hausdorff and Rosa Freedman, Professor of Law, Conflict and Global Development at Reading University.
Among the questions addressed were the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and whether arrest warrants for Hamas terrorists and Israel’s political leaders can be enforced. There were lively debates about the effectiveness of both the ICC and UN Security Council.
By the end of the evening, the audience left better informed about the impact of international law in the conflict for us and our families and friends in Israel.
