Meet Rabbi Eli and Naomi Birnbaum, Stanmore & Canons Park United Synagogue

Rabbi Eli Birnbaum, his wife Naomi, and their four children arrived at Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue close to two and a half years ago. In that short time, they have become a much-loved part of shul life. Recently, the family celebrated their second child Yoseph’s Bar Mitzvah surrounded by the warmth and support of the community, which Rabbi Birnbaum describes as “a moment that perfectly captured the sense of belonging that defines the community.”

Rabbi Eli has a clear and forward-looking vision. While his rabbinic responsibilities are wide-ranging, his core focus is community development, exploring how the synagogue can continue to grow, welcoming new members, particularly younger families and ensuring that everyone who walks through the doors feels engaged and valued and able to experience their Judaism in an exciting, relevant setting.

He shares that his journey to the rabbinate was shaped by a deeply personal experience. As a teenager, he experienced a family tragedy that led to a crisis of faith. At that time, a Rabbi at school showed him extraordinary compassion, making him feel valued, included and supported even in moments of doubt. That encounter left a lasting impression and ignited a love for Judaism’s wisdom, depth and enduring relevance, shaping the inclusive and empathetic leadership style he brings to Stanmore today.

Naomi brings her own talents and warmth to the community. An art therapist by profession, she is actively involved in communal life, running weekly educational sessions for women and playing a key role in hosting, and community events. While she never set out to be a rebbetzen, her care, creativity, and ability to connect have made her an integral part of synagogue life.

What struck the Birnbaum family about Stanmore from the outset was the absence of judgment or division. Even amid differing views and backgrounds, there is a genuine culture of respect and kindness, something visiting family members noticed immediately during the Bar Mitzvah celebrations.

As Stanmore Synagogue marks its 80th year, there is a renewed sense of energy and optimism following the challenges of recent years. With a buzz returning to communal life and an excitement about what lies ahead.
