Potters Bar & Brookmans Park United Synagogue recently arranged a visit to the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, surrounded by glorious Nottingham countryside. New York Times bestselling author of ‘The Dressmakers of Auschwitz’, Lucy Adlington, was the guest author and we felt privileged as this was the first time she’d spoken about her soon-to-be-released second book, ‘Four Red Sweaters’.
Her talk was fascinating. A clothes historian, she’d seen the first red sweater at the IWM and, intrigued to know who had owned and worn it, she explained the vast amount of research required to document how four girls and their red sweaters faced the Holocaust and how their stories ‘knitted’ together.
The Exhibition is incredibly difficult to read, watch and listen to – horrific history, artifacts with their owners’ names, horrific experiences being recounted by survivors.
The beautiful Memorial Gardens gave us a place for reflection and remembrance, reading the thousand plaques– each with its own white rose. Many thanks to the CCE for helping fund this special trip.
