Community comes together for Barnet shul Challah bake

Barnet Shul welcomed 85 people for a joyful and inspiring Challah Bake on Wednesday 8th July, hosted by Rebbetzen Miri Lister.

The evening brought together members of all ages to share in the special mitzvah of making challah in a warm, welcoming and uplifting atmosphere. Whether they were seasoned bakers or those making challah for the first time, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to learn, connect and spend time together.

A wonderful feature of the evening was the inclusion of two dedicated tables for the children and families taking part in the shul’s Bnei Mitzvah Programme and members of the Young Adults group. Bringing different generations together created a genuine sense of community, as participants prepared their challah side by side.

Throughout the evening, Rebbetzen Miri guided everyone through the challah-making process and spoke about the significance of the mitzvah. She explained how, just as many individual ingredients come together to create one beautiful loaf of challah, every individual plays an important role in building a strong and vibrant community. She then invited everyone to join her in a special moment of prayer, creating a moving and reflective atmosphere as participants paused to offer personal prayers and blessings before continuing with their challah.

At the end of the evening, everyone took their handmade challah to bake in their own kitchens at home, along with the inspiration and sense of community that had made the event so memorable.

The Challah Bake was about much more than preparing the dough. It was a celebration of Jewish tradition, friendship and community spirit. With such an enthusiastic turnout and a wonderful atmosphere throughout the evening, the event was a tremendous success and another example of Barnet Shul’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to come together.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Rebbetzen Miri for her warmth, guidance and inspiration throughout the evening, and to the wonderful team of volunteers, including Rabbi Lister, whose hard work in setting up, supporting the event and clearing away afterwards made the Challah Bake possible. The community is incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated people who give their time so generously to create events that bring everyone together.
