Lights, Chutzpah, Action!
On the evening of 8th June, Belmont Shul’s Speakers’ Corner group hosted Rachel Kosky, raconteur extraordinaire, who gave a comprehensive account of the Jewish influence on the British Film Industry to an audience of over 40 people.
It was full of facts and anecdotes about film producers, directors, distributors, movie theatre developers, sound engineers, etc, and a little about actors. The talk was fascinating and we all learnt something new. We were privileged to hear about Simon Kaye, a Belmont Shul member who won 2 Oscars and 3 Baftas as a sound engineer, and the experiences of Judy Lester who worked with many film personnel in her role with Equity.
Notably, we heard that there were few British films with specifically Jewish content, probably reflecting the fact that the protagonists were assimilating into “British Society”.
