Herts For Change and the Mencap Employment Training Programme

Herts for Change, our support group for families living with Neurodiversity in Hertfordshire, led by the Rebbetzens at Borehamwood & Elstree, Bushey, Radlett and Welwyn Garden City Synagogues, held an informative morning session with Pamela Gradel of Herts Mencap on employability for young adults with learning disabilities.

Hertsmere Mencap are a charity that provides support to individuals who are both learning disabled or neurodivergent. Pamela’s role at Mencap is running the Employment Training Programme to assist their learners in finding suitable employment.

She shared how both her lived experience and a previous professional background in recruitment has helped make delivery of the Employment Programme training course a great success.

Pamela explored the benefits and the positive outcomes that she has seen so far. We know that employment is a significant challenge for those with learning disabilities. So this was a particularly welcome session to tackle some really prevalent issues.

Parents heard how there are opportunities for those people who cannot access the academic route and crucially need support with employability. This not just enabling the hard skills but also the soft skills of of how to engage effectively in the job seeking process.

Rivka Steinberg, Community Inclusion Liaison at United Synagogue said “Pamela explained the support on offer which includes training, interview techniques and on going support once the young person embarks on their new role. Individuals are supported to help them settle in to their new role and to understand the communication skills required to work well in a team.  We really appreciated Pamela coming in to show that there are employment options for Neurodivergent young people and Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue for hosting the coffee morning.”
