United Synagogue pioneers programme to develop future community leaders

The United Synagogue recently launched ‘Lead Together’, a new programme consisting of five in-person sessions aimed at preparing participants for future senior community leadership. 16 attendees from 14 communities participated, made up of current volunteers looking to take on an enhanced leadership role within their community.

The sessions took place at South Hampstead and Brondesbury Park Synagogues as well as the United Synagogue head office, from November 2024 to March 2025.

The Chief Rabbi hosted an exclusive roundtable discussion on leadership, where he shared his thoughts, praising those around the table for their commitment to lead their communities.

Presenters at the sessions included the United Synagogue’s President Michael Goldstein, Chief Executive Jo Grose, Director of Community Life Barnaby Nemko, as well as Michelle Janes from Kisharon Langdon and Simon Berman from Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue.

Rabbi Lerer, Rebbetzen Feldman, Lisa Olins (Pinner Chair), and Vickie Wiltshire (United Synagogue HR Director) held a panel where they shared some fascinating insights into the world of Rabbinic Line management.
Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue’s Simon Berman also shared the importance of community strategy.

Participant Oliver Chessis, Chigwell & Hainault United Synagogue, said: “This was a really useful course for anyone looking to get involved, at any level, in shul life.”

Fellow participant Dan Roback, Bushey United Synagogue, said: “This programme demonstrates United Synagogues commitment to giving every community the tools needed to be successful. Anyone considering a leadership position within their community should jump at the chance to join the course.”

Jonny Ison, Community Development Manager at the United Synagogue, said: “The first iteration of Lead Together was a huge success, bringing a variety of top-quality individuals together from different communities across the United Synagogue. I am looking forward to seeing the progress of the first cohort at community leadership level, whilst at the same time very excited to start planning the next version of Lead Together.”
