29 wardens from 20 different United Synagogue communities recently came together for a highly successful Warden Forum. The aim of the event was to bring together lay leaders to share ideas, build connections and strengthen their role within their communities.
The day featured insightful talks from the Chief Rabbi, Dayan Binstock and Rabbi Roselaar, as well as a lively interactive session where a wide range of topics were discussed.
Participants gave very positive feedback about the opportunity to receive useful practical tips on overcoming issues, and also the chance to connect and learn from fellow wardens.
The Chief Rabbi said: “Succession is an important ideal in the Torah. Sometimes, a barrier to good people taking on the role of Gabbai is that they feel somewhat inadequate. It is in order for suitable people with potential to be appointed and to then learn on the job. If a community is happy to encourage that person, it’s possible to give them time to get into the swing of things. Some of the finest Gabbaim I have known have started out in this way.”
Attendee Richard Beach said: “Thank you very much to the organisers and speakers. It was really valuable to connect and share.”
Fellow warden Ian Rothstein said: “There were plenty of ideas, adaptations and inspirations that we can now try and incorporate.”
