It all began on 18 September when my partner, Lorna Moss, celebrated my 75th Birthday with a memorable visit to the theatre. The particular reason the significance of my turning 75 was that I became eligible to compete in Japan representing England in the over-75s football team. Following Lorna’s wise counsel, I chose to represent them rather than the over 70s by whom I had already been selected. It proved to be a good decision.
As a Mill Hill East member, I felt our community with me the whole way. This wasn’t just about personal milestones, it was about showing what staying active and connected can look like at any age.
Our first match was against Japan, the hosts, in 30°C heat. It was tough early on, but chances fell our way and I scored a first half hat trick. We won 5–0.
Next came Germany, a very strong team with several former Bundesliga players. We were second best and lost 5–2. That meant we had to win both remaining group games to reach the semi final. We did it! Taiwan 5–1, where I scored two and USA, where I scored another hat trick.
The semi final against Wales was tight. I put us 1–0 up before half time, they equalised with ten minutes left, and the game went to dreaded penalties. We held our nerve to win 4–2, with myself scoring from the spot.
The final brought Germany again. This time it was their day, 3–0. It was a fantastic tournament, and I am so proud to earn a silver medal and to pick up the Golden Boot as top scorer with 10 goals.
What means most, though, is bringing this back home, showing that sport can build friendships, boost wellbeing and connect generations. I’m grateful to Lorna, to my teammates, coaches, and to everyone in our community who cheered us on.
If my journey encourages even one more person across our communities to get out there and become more active, walking football, pickleball, there’s a lot out there for seniors nowadays, join a local session, or simply get moving with friends, then that’s a result I’ll cherish forever.
Now it’s time to recover, then head back out there and go again. It certainly was quite an adventure.
