Celebrating a decade of dedication: Rabbi and Rebbetzen Sturgess mark their 10-year anniversary

The community gathered in joy and gratitude to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the induction of Rabbi Daniel Sturgess as Rabbi of St Albans Synagogue, alongside his wife, Rebbetzen Alli.  The couple were honoured for over a decade of inspiring leadership, warmth and commitment.

The special and unique occasion – prior to the Sturgesses’ arrival, the community had been without a spiritual leader for 50 years – was graced by the presence of the Chief Rabbi, who paid tribute to the unwavering dedication of both Rabbi Daniel and Rebbetzen Alli and the remarkable growth of the congregation. When Rabbi and Rebbetzen Sturgess first arrived, the shul had just 160 members. Today, nearly 11 years later, it has flourished, now totalling over 350 members and becoming the second fastest-growing community in the US fold – a testament to their hard work, compassion and vision.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful atmosphere as well as a delicious tea, lovingly prepared by the Social Committee, led by Claire Agasee. The event was superbly organised by Vice Chair Jeanette Grenby, ensuring every detail reflected the warmth and appreciation felt by the community.

During the celebration, Chair Elissa Da Costa-Waldman delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for Rabbi and Rebbetzen Sturgess’  tireless service, pointing out, to much laughter, that, unusually, the rabbi’s sermons were so popular that no-one ever fell asleep during them.  Also on the programme were a poetic tribute from member Deanne Gold and a song, “I am the Very Model of a Modern US Rabbi”, a clever parody of the Major-General’s number by Gilbert & Sullivan, composed by the Chair and delivered by Keith Appleby and shul warden Ian Rothstein.    Among gifts presented to the Sturgesses was a special commemorative book in recognition of their achievements and lasting impact.

Thanking and congratulating Rabbi Daniel and Rebbetzen Alli on what was actually 11 years of dedicated service, Chair Elissa  concluded: “we look forward with excitement to the years ahead; we hope you will be with us for many more decades to come and that you will continue to be as loved and appreciated as you are today.”
