For many of us Purim is the most joyous festival of the year. It’s loud and raucous and lots of fun. Purim can also lead to challenges for those with additional needs. For example, sensory overload or overstimulation may be a barrier due to the somewhat chaotic festivities, costumes, noise and general unpredictability.
We are delighted therefore that several of our communities are offering quieter and more accessible Megillah readings. These readings give those with disabilities the chance to engage with Purim.
Alei Tzion have a family-friendly Megillah reading on Thursday (13 March) at 6.45pm. This offers flexibility if children can only stay for a short time.
Borehamwood and Elstree have quieter readings on Thursday at 6.45pm at Yavneh, 8pm at Yavneh, 8.15pm at Croxdale and on Friday (14 March) at 6.30am at Croxdale with Shacharit.
Bushey are offering (members-only) specific Purim activities for those with additional needs including a calm story time whilst the 6.30pm Megillah reading is taking place on Thursday evening.
Cockfosters and Southgate have quieter readings on Purim morning (Friday 14 March) at 8.30am and 10am.
Finchley (Kinloss) is hosting its latest ‘Shul for the Mind’ before Purim for people with dementia and their families. They are having a pre-Purim Megillah highlights event this Sunday (9 March) at 11am. (flyer)
